Social Ministry Social Ministry is each and every one of us. Our ongoing outreach in the community is a large part of who we are. In Matthew, chapter 25, verses 35-40, Jesus said, "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stanger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me." Then the righteous will answer him, "Lord when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it thgat we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?" And the king will answer them, "Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me."

Social Ministry is a very well sponsored ministry at Christ the King. The ministries we support on a weekly basis include: Day House, the Food Pantry at Good Hope Lutheran Church, Lutheran Social Services of Michigan, LPS Clothing Depot, and World Hunger. There are also many seasonal ministries supported.

Our collection of items for Day House in Detroit are - Hand Lotion, Deoderant, Sanitary items, Powdered Detergent, Napkins, Toilet Paper, and Large Trash Bags.

The monthly "Bring One" Sunday is a very successful and fun way of collecting the specific items most needed at the Food Pantry. Christ the King's contributions to the food pantry at Good Hope Lutheran Church helps enable them to distribute food to the needy families in our community on a regular basis. Our January "Bring One" Sunday was VERY successful. The Food Bank fed over 400 people last month.

On February 14th, we will be collecting Canned Fruit and any type of "Box Goods" (potatoes, the helpers, etc). If you don't like to shop, monetary contributions can be given to Katie or Nancy and will be taken to the food pantry when we take the collected food. Brothers and sisters in Christ, you are doing a great job to help alleviate hunger in our local area. Keep up the good work!

One of the young people from Good Hope Lutheran Church is going to be collecting personal items such as: soap, toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, hand lotions, etc. for his Eagle Scout project. He will distribute them to the families who come to the Food Pantry. The tentative date for this collection is February 27th. Social Ministry will put a box in the hallway for any items Christ the King members would like to donate.

We will also have a box in the hallway for our "Bubbles & Bars Collection". We are collecting shampoo, conditioner, and soap, either bars or liquid. Small personal sized items such as those found on sample shelves are also welcome. These items will be taken to Risen Christ Lutheran Church in Plymouth Township and they will give them to the Open Door Ministry of Canton and the Salvation Army who will distribute them to anyone who needs them. This will be an ongoing project and will continue until there is no need for these items.

LSSM Adopt-A-Room: During the 2010 season of Lent (February 17th – March 28th) several local ELCA congregations will join together to sponsor a room at the Wayne County Family Center in Westland, Michigan. The Wayne County Family Center is run by Lutheran Social Services of Michigan and provides services for homeless families needing assistance. The Adopt-A Room program allows donors to share in the life of a homeless family by replacing worn out or old items with newer items. This allows those using the Center to feel valued and important as they seek to get their lives turned around. It is a wonderful way to reach out with the love of Christ to those in need of support and assistance in difficult times.

We at Christ the King will be emphasizing the collection of tangible items for use in these rooms. New or very gently used items that can be donated for the rooms include: rugs, artwork, wall décor, clocks, new toys, twin size bed sheets, pillowcases, and stuffed animals. If wish to donate money instead of goods to this project, please make out a check to Christ the King and place it in a pew envelope (preferably separate from your regular offering) and note Adopt-A-Room on the envelope and on the memo line of the check.

If you have ideas for sharing our blessings, contact Katie Frank or Nancy Wittl, the church office, or send an e-mail.
